If you have been contemplating a visit to Nice, France, then wait no longer. Marc Chagall museum
A must see stop is the National Museum of Chagall, or better known as Musee National Marc Chagall. This museum is one of a kind and was created to bring together the biblical works of Russian born artist, Marc Chagall. Chagall is known as the most representative Jewish artist of the century.
It is a permanent collection and the biggest of its kind. The collection is based on Old Testament themes and supplemented by secular and religious works. There are over 400 paintings, stained glass, drawings, sculptures, gouaches, tapestries, mosaics, pastels and wash drawings.
The first room contains 12 large sized interpretations that depict the first two books of the Old Testament – Genesis and Exodus. The 12 paintings in chronological order are:
- The Creation of Man
- Abraham and the Three Angels
- Paradise
- The Sacrifice of Isaac
- Jacob Wrestling with the Angel
- Moses and the Burning Bush
- Striking the Rock
- Jacob’s Dream
- Noah and the Rainbow
- Noah’s Ark
- Adam and Eve Banished from Paradise
- Moses Receiving the Ten Commandments
In the second, more intimate, chapel like room, there are five paintings regarding the theme of the Song of Songs, also another Old Testament book. These depict a prominent red color and offer three dimensions – musical, sacred and carnal. In an antechamber, a mosaic of Elijah in his fiery chariot is on display through a plate-glass window.
The museum as audio guides in multiple languages, including French, German, Italian, English, Russian, Chinese and Japanese. They also offer free admission on the 1st Sunday of each month. Don’t miss this fascinating art display, full of history and elegance.
