If there is one museum to visit in Nice, it is the prestigious Matisse Museum which has gathered together one of the largest private collections of his work. The Museum is located in the Villa des Arènes, a large 16th century Genoese House. It’s a very interesting visit for all the lovers of the culture and history.

Henri Matisse

Henri Matisse (1869-1954) is one of the greatest French painters. Leader of Fauvism, he was fond of colorful paintings. He maintained ties with Pablo Picasso. He died in Nice, city that he appreciated particularly.

Matisse has always loved the French Riviera and has often represented it in his paintings. He was buried in the cemetery of Cimiez in Nice.

The Matisse museum of Nice

The Matisse museum of Nice houses a fine collection of paintings by the master. It covers a good representative period of evolution works by the artist starting in 1890 with the first paintings and ending at the end of his life with gouaches papers.

The collection contains sixty eight paintings as ”La liseuse à la table jaune “(1944) or « la Nature morte aux grenades » (1947). There are also drawings and engravings as well as most of the carved works of Matisse. The sculptures are particularly interesting with such works as” Le Tiaré” (1930) or “ La Serpentine” (1909).

In addition to the works of art of the painter, the museum exposes a few personal effects allowing the most passionate to get closer to the artist.

The Museum also has a beautiful park, the Park of the “Arènes de Cimiez”. With its olive trees, it is a pleasant walk that Matisse loved very much.
